That win solidified a league championship, ending with only 1 loss! Congrats to these Falcons going 11-1 in league!!!
On 2/18 the ladies started their Section tournament in a positive way. In a overwhelming win against Woodland beating them 72-16. Great team win with everyone on the board.
2/19 In the second round of the section tournament the ladies took to the floor against the Lady Buffaloes of Manteca. It was a hard caught battle through and through, but your Falcons came out on top after some clutch free throw shooting at the end of the game from Sarah Jackson ‘21, who led the team with 20 points and Karli Cooper ‘22 who was clutch from the line as well and ended with 17 points. Men’s Freshmen Basketball
. The Men’s Freshman Team ended the season with an outstanding record of 23-4. This includes a CAL league record of 11-1. We avenged our only league loss to Capital Christian with a dominating 60-38 win on February 14th. The Freshman team has now won back to back CAL league championships and hopes to continue this trend heading into next year. Looking back on the season, the boys improved so much in every facet of the game. Even other teams were taking notice on how well we defended and how selfless we played on the offensive end of the floor. Coach Ray Cordano consistently emphasized for every player to “do their job” and we feel that the boys did just that.
Marcus Price ’23 did an outstanding job running the point guard position and Georgio Mackis ’23 controlled the paint on both ends of the floor. Jared Wiley ’23 is one of the most athletic and naturally gifted freshman that CB has seen in recent years. Additionally, we also had very selfless players, such as Johnny Vishaj ’23 and Isaiah Ito ’23, who did whatever it took to help the team get wins. But the Most Valuable Player for the Men’s Freshman Team this year was Joey Vanacore ’23. Joey is one of the best team players and is quietly competitive, especially considering he is an absolute baller. The culture of the team was special and we hope that this basketball experience played a part in the players making the transition from boys to men.
Men’s JV Basketball
The JV Men's Basketball team finished their season with a road game at first place Capital Christian. It was an extremely close game throughout, including a three quarter court shot by Michael Wiggin ('22) to tie the game at the end of the third quarter. Unfortunately, Capital Christian made just enough outside shots down the stretch to secure the 67-59 victory. Key contributors included Andre Verspieren ('22) with 15 points and 2 steals and John Piegaro ('22) with 9 points and 9 rebounds.
All in all, the season was a successful one for the Falcons, finishing 18-9 overall and 7-5 in league. A standout game from the season was the come from behind victory against Davis to win the Les Curry Invitational, aided by the stellar play of All-Tourney Michael Wiggin and Tournament MVP John Marengo ('22). Other highlights included an early season win at River City with Avante Lee ('22) shutting down the Raiders' best player in the second half and an 18-point victory in January against Sac High.
In addition to those already mentioned, we wanted to thank Devin Johnson, Elias Emsieh, Donovan Chock, Cooper Rapton, Ryan Rodriguez, Zeke Jackson, JJ Hays Jr., and Miles Mendis, all from the Class of 2022, for their hard work this season.
And to all the players, one last time, for good measure: BINGO!
Men’s Varsity Basketball
In our final regular season game your Falcons traveled to Capital Christian in hopes to steal one on their home floor. It was their senior night but that did not stop the varsity boys from coming out very strong to begin the game. Mid way through the first quarter Capital turned up the heat and never looked back. The boys played extremely hard and fought until the final buzzer. Final score CC 81 CB 46. This brought our regular season to an end with an overall record of 16-12 and a 7-5 league record. This was good enough for 3rd place league finish which propelled us to the 4 seed in the upcoming section playoff race. Congrats to your boys for a great regular season.
Wednesday brought about our first playoff opponent as Beyer HS came to Falcon Country. The Falcons had used home court advantage to the fullest and stormed out of the gate with stifling defense. Going into halftime, your Falcons were up 39-12. With a little back and forth in the second half, the boys finished the game in convincing fashion beating Beyer by a score of 71-39! Our second round matchup is tonight at home again versus Golden Valley at 7pm. Please come out and support you Varsity Falcons!!!!
Cheers
Rugby
Varsity rugby took a loss to top ranked De La Salle on Saturday. Jared Hunter ‘21 scored our only try. This weekend we have our Kick Off Tournament at Cordova High School which will officially kick off our rugby season.
Women’s Varsity Soccer
This past Wednesday our Lady Falcons started on the road to section finals. We hosted W.C. Wood of Vacaville. In the first half CB controlled the game from the first whistle. Senior Sara Cruz (20) scored first with a ball that had major top spin on it that went through the goalkeepers hands. Our second goal came on a set piece from Mariah Hudnut (20). The half came to an end and we were up 2-0.
In the second half CB would score from a shot from Sara Cruz(20). The visitor would score, but it was too late, CB would walk away with a 3-1 victory. Next up we host Ceres this Friday a 6:00 kickoff at Sacramento City College.
Men’s Varsity Soccer
On Tuesday evening, the Varsity boys squared-off against Atwater High School in a CIF 1st Round match. The boys came out excited and determined to play well in front of the home crowd. As the game kicked off, the Falcons looked ready to go. The team began with a fast pace and created some goal-scoring opportunities early on. However, they couldn’t put the ball in the net. Numerous shots were sent just wide or high of the target, and the team grew frustrated. Although the Falcons dominated possession and opportunities, the game remained tied at zero. As the second half began, the game became more aggressive and fouls began to accumulate for both teams. Unfortunately, a couple of the Falcons’ players were injured as a result of the aggressive play. As time continued, so did the aggressive play, and the referee began trying to settle things down with yellow cards.
Midway through the 2nd half, the Atwater Falcons broke through the CB defense and scored a goal against the momentum of the game. This woke the boys in blue up and they began increasing their pressure on Atwater. As the game entered the final 10 minutes of regulation, CB still trailed 1-0. The team changed their formation, opting for an all-out attack strategy. This paid off for the Falcons, as Tyler Valerio ’21 scored a header goal with 4 minutes remaining in the game to tie the score. As the whistle blew, the game remained tied at 1, meaning that the game would go into 2 overtime periods.
Both overtime periods saw chances to score for both teams. However, neither found the back of the net and the game stayed tied. This would lead to a penalty “Shoot-out”.
Unfortunately, CB was unable to convert a couple of our penalty kicks. Atwater defeated our Falcons 4-3 on penalties. This ended the Falcons playoff run and season.
It was a bitter end to a great season. The Falcons did an outstanding job representing Christian Brothers on and off the field. The team will greatly miss the 11 seniors who will be leaving the program. We wish them all the best in the future. We would also like to thank all of our families and friends who supported us throughout the season. THANK YOU! Your love and support carried us our most successful season since 2014.
JV Softball
Our Lady Falcons JV softball team has been working hard and are eager for the start of the preseason schedule. They will be participating in a 3-game scrimmage this Saturday at North Natomas Regional Park. Even with the roster being comprised of 6 players brand new to the sport, the coaching staff is encouraged by what they have seen so far. Each of them has given max effort to learn the game as quickly as they can. The outlook to the season is positive with emerging leaders in returners Bianca Flores ’22, Lilianna Sanchez ’22, Jenna Puumala ’22 and Angeline Picou ’22. New to the team and looking to make an immediate impact are Madison Davies ’23, Olicia Martinez ’23, Tori Becker ’23, and Sarai Rice ’22. Rounding out the team are beginners Angel Mucheru ’23, Kaylin Holliman ’22, Kelly Cook ’22, Marleah Berry ’22, and Shirley Garcia ’22. Varsity Softball
This upcoming softball season will return key player, Grace Tangen ‘20 who played in 23 games last year while holding a stellar .407 batting average in 77 Plate Appearances. Tangen will also lead us in the Circle this 2020 season. Also returning to the Varsity roster making a positive impact last year, Ysabel Moreno ‘21, Victoria Fenner ‘21, and Kennedy Cunha ‘22. All three players contributed significant playing time to the Varsity team in the 2019 season. Along with the returners we have a lot of new faces joining the varsity team as well, including 5 freshman. Natalie Baker ‘23, Jolie Gomez ‘23, Tiana Johnson ‘23, Ofa Po’oi ‘23, and Morgan Strawn ‘23 all look to make their freshman debuts on our Varsity roster this year. Some other familiar faces who are back in the cleats this year coming from JV last year are Yvette Castellanos ‘22 and Gina Carnago ‘21. Liv Tanberg ‘20 will also be returning to the Varsity roster this year to finish her senior year strong! We lead off this weekend with some scrimmages vs. Armijo, El Camino, and Sac High. Our first game is at Inderkum on March 3 at 3:45pm. League will begin at Vista Del Lago on Thursday March 12 at 4:15pm. As a young and competitive team we will look to grow every game and compete with every team we face. The future of Christian Brothers softball is bright!
Women’s Lacrosse
Varsity lacrosse has been working hard prepping for the new season. The midfield team of Lily Witry 20, Megan Cann 22, and Freshman Shannon Wong 23 are going to be a strong force. Tessa Easterling 22 moved up to varsity to play goalie and Sarah Louie ‘20 and Katie Gergen ’20 are leading up an aggressive defender group. 2/21 the team is volunteering at the food bank. Saturday 2/22 they have their first scrimmages and their first game is Monday against league rival Bella Vista. We can’t wait to play in the new stadium.
JV lacrosse welcomed 12 new player to lacrosse. Sophomore returners Ava Dominguez 22 and Brooke Koenig 22 have been great leaders for the newcomers. Quinn Pulliam 23 and Kathleen Kuzmich 23 bring some experience to the team as freshman. Briana Burgos ‘23 stepped up and have been learning the skills of goalie. The coaches can’t wait to see what this group does!
Men’s Tennis
CB Men’s tennis had a great tryout with 24 Falcons showing up to battle each other for spots in the top 12. We have every varsity singles player returning for what looks to be a year when we will challenge perennial league champion Rio Americano for the title. Returning Seniors Chris Fong ‘20, and Kai Hay ’20 are four year varsity players who will be counted upon to carry the burden of winning our league matches. Juniors Anthony Tan-Andia, ’21, Ryan Price, ’21, and Alex Stone, ’21, are all playing well and we expect they will have great years. Junior Charlie Brueckner, ’21, is playing his first year of high school tennis and is a huge add to our team. He will play singles and is a tough out to borrow a baseball phrase. Sophomore Sean Johnson, ’22, showed up ready after of Summer of hard work on the courts…he tells us he intends to make some noise in the league soon. We also added 15 freshman including Jacob Steenhousen, ’23, and Tim Cole, ’23, who showed up and made the upperclassman realize that they could not rest upon past greatness (or maybe just past efforts). Chris Fong, ’20 will someday be the Governor of CA so why not let him lead our team as Co-Captain…he will be joined by Alex Stone, ’21 Holy Bowl starting offensive tackle and Champion. His nicknames are- The Chairman of the Board, The Boss, and El Hefe. We are so excited to have a huge team and a very skilled team.
