JV Volleyball went into their match against El Camino down two starters. The team rallied and took advantage of the opportunity to step up and shine, beating El Camino in 2 sets, 25-5 and 25-10. We had a serving spree and deathly kills to keep the opponent team under 10. Alexis Adebodun '22 had 7 Aces and 3 kills, Grace Reinhardt '22 had 4 Kills, Ava Delucchi '23 had 2 Aces, 1 Kill and a Solo Block, Danny Thiedbud '23 had 4 Kills, Sienna Schubert '22 had 1 Kill, Hillary Chu '22 had 3 Aces, Nina Chenu '22 had 3 Aces! Varsity Football
The Christian Brothers Falcons defeated rival Jesuit 30-27 in the 49th annual Holy Bowl, snapping a decade long losing streak against the Marauders. Jesuit came into the game ranked 40th by MaxPreps, while the Falcons were 51st, but given the history of the rivalry it was a far bigger upset. It was a seesaw battle the entire way, with the lead changing four times in the final two quarters. Quarterback Jacob Stewart ‘21 had another solid game, going 10-16 passing for 100 yards with one passing and one rushing touchdown. Running back Justin Douglas ‘21 also played a key part in the victory, rushing 13 times for 50 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Luke Jones ‘20 made clutch plays throughout the game, scoring a big touchdown and providing a 98 yard kickoff return late in the game. Special teams proved to be a major factor, with the Falcons blocking both an extra point and a field goal in the game.
The Falcon defense started the game hot, forcing a Jesuit fumble on the opening possession. The Christian Brothers offense then ran right through the Marauder defense, with the drive culminating in a 4 yard rushing touchdown by Justin Douglas. Jesuit quickly fought back, driving the ball down the field and scoring on a 6 yard rush by running back Ace Saca. Saca finished the game with three touchdowns. However, the PAT was blocked and Christian Brothers retained a 7-6 lead. The Falcons scored quickly on their next possession, with a 35 yard catch by receiver Bryan Garrett ‘21 followed by a 30 yard rush by Douglas for his second touchdown of the game, making the score 13-6.
The game slowed down after that, with both teams turning the ball over on their next possession. Early in the second quarter, Jesuit was able to tie the score with a long run by quarterback Jacob Peluso followed by another Saca score. Christian Brothers kicked a field goal right before the half, going into the break with a 16-13 lead.
Jesuit was able to regain momentum in the third quarter, scoring on another long run by Saca to take a 20-16 edge. The score remained 20-16 until late in the third quarter, when Stewart found Luke Jones in the back of the end zone for a 15 yard touchdown to give the lead back to CB. Jesuit answered right back, taking a good chunk of time off the clock before pounding in a 1 yard score to make the score 27-23.
Luke Jones returned the pursuing Jesuit kickoff all the way down to the 3 yard line, giving CB four chances to retake the lead. However, the Marauder defense was able to come up with a huge goal line stand, preserving their lead and putting a Falcon win in serious jeopardy.
With little time left and Jesuit needing just a few more first downs to run out the clock, Viliami Lotima '21 came up with a clutch fumble recovery on Jesuit’s own 10 yard line. The CB offense wouldn’t be denied again, scoring on a 5 yard run by Jacob Stewart to take a 30-27 lead. With Christian Brothers needing just one more stop to get their first Holy Bowl win in a decade, Caylen Walker ‘20 deflected Peluso’s fourth down pass, giving the ball back to CB and allowing them to run out the clock.
It was one of Christian Brothers’ biggest wins in recent history. The victory brings the Falcons to 3-1 on the season, while Jesuit is now 0-3. This was CB’s final game before league competition. Next up is a matchup with defending Division III champion Capital Christian, which should serve as another tough test. The game will be played on Friday, September 20th at Capital Christian High School.
JV Football
Lost 41-7 to Jesuit in Holy Bowl 49. Ezekial Jackson ’22 scored the lone touchdown for the Falcons on a “Pick-6”.
The team travels to Capital Christian tonight to begin league play. Come out and support the team.
Women’s Golf
CB came in second in the CAL #1 Tournament at Teal Bend GC on Monday shooting a solid 425 to Vista Del Lago’s 415. The Falcons are closing in and getting better. Anna Horan’21 fired a stellar 78, breaking 80 for the first time in her competitive career. Outstanding Anna! Not to be outdone, Alison Oliviera ’22 ripped an 80 to set her career-low as well. Most impressive by these ladies was their overall feeling that they can still do better, their competitive spirt should be admired.
On Thursday the Falcons learned that sometimes things do go as planned but in spite of that they can preserver in an important match. The Falcons and Rio Raiders tangled again, it would be a pivotal match. These two play close matches all the time. Thursday was no exception. Both teams played a scruffy match below their high standards, but CB won out. With that win CB is guaranteed a place in the Section tournament. This makes four years in a row! 227 to 235 it was the score, it was not pretty. The Falcons learned you just keep grinding and on a given day you just have to be the best on the course, not the best in the world.
There was a lot of team spirit, support for each other and a sigh of relief. Good job girls!
Our best is yet to come, check us out sometime!
