Women’s Tennis
The Lady Falcons wrapped up their historic season this week as the co-Capital Athletic League champs finished the year with a 14-2 record. The girls' strong season led them to the 2nd seed in the California Interscholastic Federation Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Championships.
The team opened the playoffs on Monday when they faced off against the Vikings of Valley High School where the girls showed the poise and precision that had led them this far. From the first serve, the Lady Falcons soared over the Vikings. Top seeds Fiona Babcock '21 and Bianca Cabanag '21 easily won their matches 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-1. Ai-Linh Tran '21 and Tessa Easterling '22 also won 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-3. While Sydney Obmann '20 and Lola Jan '21 wrapped up the singles sweep with 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-1 victories.
The girls kept up the pressure on the doubles side where the teams of Emma Frink '21 and Kennedy Gudmann '20, Emma Emigh '21 and Lena Mikacich '22, and Lily Witry '20 and Mariana Garcia '21 swept their three matches by a combined score of 36-3. When the balls stopped bouncing, Christian Brothers had advanced to the semifinals with a 9-0 sweep.
Wednesday's match would prove to be much tougher, as the Lady Falcons faced off another group of Vikings, this time from Vanden High School. The girls swept the competition on the doubles side with the teams of Emigh and Mikacich, Gudmann and Garcia, and Isabella (Isa) Warford '20 and Sophia Sidley '21 winning by scores of 7-6 and 6-3, 7-6 (13-11) and 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3.
However, the competition was more challenging on the singles side where nothing came easy. With Christian Brothers in the lead 3-2, the Cabanag, Tran, Easterling, and Jan matches were still undecided. The exchanges were evenly matched, Jan took an early lead in the 6-4, but came up short in the second and third set. After dropping the first set, Easterling came out firing with a slight advantage of 5-4 in the second set, but was unable to prevail during the deuce points, losing 5-7. After multiple 50 shot rallys, Cabanag fell 4-6 and 5-7. Tran was the only player to break through, splitting sets winning in the hard-fought 12-10 tiebreak. The girls came up one win short in losing 4-5 in a match that ended their season.
Overall, Coach Sean Mar says he could not be prouder of the effort the team put on and off the court this season.
"The team played phenomenally! No one person gave up, that is exactly how I would want our team to go out. Heads held high, laughter, joy, smiles, and a true respect for the game," he said. "I am so proud of these young ladies! Our team has come so far in the past couple of years, this season was monumental for our team winning its first pennant as co-champions of our league - Congratulations!"
The girls enjoyed another first on Thursday, when the doubles teams of Babcock and Tran as well as Cabanag and Easterling represented Christian Brothers in the section championships at the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville. This concludes our 2019 season, we can’t wait to see the new faces and talent in 2020, until then.
