Women’s Varsity Soccer
Tuesday night was Senior night at Sacramento City College. Our seniors were honored for there 4 years of hard work and dedication to The Women’s Soccer program at CB. In addition we also honored the 9 Seniors from visiting Vista Del Lago High School. After the ceremonies all attention was on the match against these two big giants. The last time our Lady Falcons played Vista it was without Goalkeeper Lauren Towne (20) and Forward Sara Cruz (20). This did play into a rough night as we lost 3-0. This time would be a little different, as we would have the services of Lauren Sara. In the first half CB played very tough and physical. We possessed and pass the ball around a lot better this time then we did in the previous match. Vista Del Lago seemed to be caught off guard by CB’s attacking of the ball. The half came to an end with a scoreless first half. In the second half once again physical play and hustle from the likes of Gracelynn Selleaze (20), Claire LaRocca (22), Grace Cloete (22), Lexi Rakela (21) would prove to be a tough night for the visitors. In addition Lauren Towne (20) made some key saves that kept the match at a tie. Vistas would finally score with about 12 minutes left in the match. It was a great effort by CB but in the end the score would be 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
On Thursday CB would travel to Del Campo. A win in this match would secure a second place finish for CB, a loss or tie would drop our Lady Falcons to third. The match started with a Del Campo squad playing quick and sending long passes to quick forwards. It took CB about 15 minutes to adjust and slowly get into a passing groove. CB got on the board first with a banger of a shot from outside the box by Kristin Lee (22). Del Campo came back and tie the score to end the half. In the second half CB would struggle to find the back of the net with shots from Lexi Rakela (21). Del Campo would put two more goals in to finish the night with a 3-1 victory. This loss in the final game of league places CB in third place. We will advance to playoffs and play this Wednesday against Wood HS at Hughes Stadium (6:00).
Overall record 10-6-5 League 6-3-3.
Men’s JV Soccer
Entering the last week of the season our JV boys soccer team travelled to Vista Del Lago to take on the Eagles. The 1st half was a very defensive half as neither team was able to create many scoring opportunities, ending the half tied at zeros. In the 2nd half play opened up and more scoring opportunities were created. The Eagles struck first as they scored on a cross from the left side and a nice finish to go up 1-0. Ten minutes later our boys in blue tied the score on a cross from the right side from Aeden Carroll '22 that Demonte Robinson '22 headed the ball into the back of net. Both teams created more scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize. Game ended 1-1.
On Thursday night the visiting Del Campo Cougars came into Hughes Stadium looking to avenge their early lost to our young Falcons. The Cougars struck first as they scored in the first 2 minutes of the game as they caught our defense off guard and not ready to play. After that the boys controlled the rest of the 1st half but their aim was not on point and unable to capitalize on the many scoring opportunities. At the end of the half our boys found themselves down 1-0. The boys in blue continued their dominance in the 2nd half. Midway through the 2nd half Frankie Maldonado '22 put in the equalizer on a nice shot from 20 yards away. The boys continued to put on pressure on the Cougars goal but it wasn't meant to be, as the boys were just a able to rescue a tied.
Overall it was a great season by our young Falcons. As we finished the season with a 5-5-9 record. The coaching staff was proud of the hard work the boys put in this season.
Overall Record 5-5-9
League Record 1-2-4
Men’s Varsity Soccer
On Tuesday evening, the varsity boys travelled to Folsom to face Vista Del Lago in a league contest. The game started slow, with little momentum or enthusiasm coming from either team. That changed when junior Antonio Jacobo ’21 entered the game. Less than 2 minutes after entering the game, he received a pass from Josaun Fitten ’20 and delivered a beautiful shot to the upper corner of the goal to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Following the goal, CB’s offense began to put things together and connect passes around the Vista defense. While the boys in blue were dominating the possession, the score remained 1-0 at half.
The second half resumed where the first left off…Christian Brothers picked up their intensity and moved the ball around the field to create numerous goal-scoring opportunities. This paid off in the 60th minute, when Hunter Dierlam ’20 got on the end of a cross from Josaun Fitten ’20 and slotted it into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. The team was not done scoring, as RJ Dore ’20 added the 3rd and final goal for the Falcons. Fitten, found RJ on the ”back post” with a corner kick. RJ looked relaxed and comfortable, as he finished the goal from 15 yards out. While Vista didn’t have too many opportunities, the few that they had were dismissed by goalkeeper Johnnie White ’20, who posted another “clean sheet”. Final score: CB 3, Vista 0.
Thursday evening, the boys hosted Del Campo for “Senior Night”. This was the last regular season home game for our 11 seniors. Prior to the game, the team recognized Jackson Ryan ’20, Clark Jacobson ’20, Hunter Dierlam ’20, Colin Quinn ’20, Caleb Quinn ’20, Declan Simonovich ’20, Lars Jensen ’20, RJ Dore ’20, Scott Cotter ’20, Johnnie White ’20, and Josaun Fitten’20. After the senior festivities ended, the team jumped on Del Campo. The boys came out hungry and created many chances in the opening minutes of the match. However, it wasn’t until the 28th minute that the Falcons got on the board. Captain Hunter Dierlam ’20 received a pass around midfield, took two touches, then fired a shot from 35 yards out and into the upper corner of the goal. This goal got the huge crowd on their feet and the boys picked up their intensity afterward. The score remained 1-0 in favor of CB at half, even though we dominated possession and opportunities.
As the second half began, the team continued to put things together and played some beautiful soccer. There were many combination passes and goal-scoring opportunities for the Falcons. In the 62nd minute, junior midfielder Cole Hanna ’21 flicked a ball over the head of the keeper from a pass by Caleb Quinn ’20 to give the Falcons the 2-0 lead. The team continued to pepper the Del Campo defense and have many shots at the goal. In the 73 minute, junior Tyler Valerio ’21 scored the 3rd and final goal of the game off a penalty kick. Final score: CB 3- Del Campo-0.
With the win, the Varsity boys improve to 10-2 in CAL and 15-6-2 Overall. Next week, the Falcons begin their playoff run. They will host their 1st round game on Tuesday at 6:00 at Hughes Stadium.
