Christian Brothers High School administrators continue to closely monitor information regarding the new coronavirus (COVID-19) and we are working diligently to respond as quickly as possible to a rapidly evolving issue. This morning, we made the decision to suspend all athletic activities including outside facility users (AAU and grammar school track teams etc.) and art performances beginning today through April 13. This suspension includes rehearsals, practices, games, conditioning, bonding activities, etc. Further, we have canceled all student travel including next week’s Kairos retreat and an upcoming college tour. These decisions were made based upon the information we have from health agencies.
JV Softball
Our JV softball team played 2 games this last week. First up was an away game on March 9 vs a very good Ponderosa team. The team got down early and was not able to overcome Ponderosa’s experience. Our inexperience and inability to put up any runs made the score look a lot worse than the outcome of the game. Pitcher Olicia Martinez ’23 gave her best effort on the mound and provided one of the two hits in the game. Tori Becker ’23 had the other hit, a line drive single into the outfield. This loss was a definite eye opener and motivated the team to want to work even harder.
Our next game was an away league game on March 12 vs Vista del Lago. Again, our team would fall behind early and could not recover. Different from the Pondo game, Vista earned all their runs with a fine display of hitting. Although the score may indicate otherwise, the team made a lot of impressive defensive plays and the coaches are proud of their improvements. Pitcher Lily Sanchez ’22 was in the circle giving up only 3 walks, while her defense fought hard to contain Vista’s high-powered offense. It was another tough day generating runs for our team. Our bright spots were hits from Bianca Flores ’22, Sarai Rice ’22, and Angeline Picou ’22. These Falcons are working hard and improving each day. With the season in peril, the team is eager to get back onto the field in hopes of earning their first victory. Go Brothers! Overall Record 0-3, League 0-1.
Varsity Softball
Our Varsity Lady Falcons faced two of the toughest opponents of the season this past week playing Ponderosa and Vista Del Lago, both very high ranked SJS teams. On Tuesday the lady falcons travel to Ponderosa for their second match of the season. Facing some tough pitching our lone hit of the game came from Grace Tangen ‘20. Tangen also pitched 5 innings and Natalie Baker ‘23 made her first appearance of the season throwing 1 inning. In a tough first post of the season, we fell to Ponderosa 10-1. Thursday we traveled to Vista Del Lago and put up a fight. Making a come back in the fifth inning to tie it up at 5-5, the ladies ultimately ended up falling 9-5. Due to some defensive errors, Grace Tangen ‘20 only allowed 4 earned runs and 5 unearned runs. Tangen, once again pitched a complete game for us with 6 K’s and 6 innings pitched and at the plate went 1x2 with 1RBI and 1 walk. Tiana Johnson ‘23 was 2x4 with 2 RBI’s. Bel Moreno ‘21 went 2x3 with 1 RBI. After facing the toughest teams of the season the lady falcons look to find some smooth sailing from here on out still looking to build on a very young, yet talented team.
Men’s Lacrosse
Men’s lacrosse had a strong week, with wins against St. Mary’s of Stockton and Whitney High School. The team hosted St. Mary’s on Wednesday, a team that beat us twice last season. In a battle to the end, Christian Brothers pulled the win, 7-6. Goals were spread around the team, with Russell Foster ’22, Sam Ketcher ’22, Tyler Webster ’21, Tyler Valerio ’21, and freshman Liam Gough ’23 all scoring. Goalie Nate Guerrero ’23 played a tremendous game, with 17 saves. Long pole Defensemen Clayton Ketcher ’21 put on a defensive clinic in the backfield, frustrating St. Mary’s Middies and Attacks the entire game, and prompting a fan from St. Mary’s in the stands to yell, “Now that’s how you play defense!”.
Wednesday the team traveled to Whitney High School. Goalie Nate Guerrero ’23 and the strong defense held the Whitney offense to 2 points. Defensemen James Kubish ’22, Zach Brewer ’22, Bennett Kimble ’22, Joseph Dozier ’22, and Jackson Schlink ’22 all contributed to the defensive effort. The powerful Falcons offense, led by Tyler Webster ’21, Russell Foster ’22, and Sam Ketcher ’22, racked up 7 points. The sophomore Middie and Attack force of John Grubbs ’22, Miles Tibon ’22, Pete Muniz ’22, Ray Fernandez ’22, Griffin Moore ‘22 and Josh Schneider ’22 overwhelmed the Whitney squad.

Men’s Tennis
The Falcons had a great week starting off by beating Kennedy 6-3. Chris Fong ’20 led the way playing #1 singles winning (6-0, 6-2). Sean Johnson ‘22 playing at #3 was tested but prevailed (6-4, 7-5). Alex Stone ‘21 remained undefeated at #4, winning (6-3, 6-3). The match of the day was played at #1 doubles where freshmen Dylan Tamblyn ’23 and Sam Strachan ’23 went three sets with a determined Kennedy pair. Finding themselves down 4-8 in the tiebreaker, Dylan and Sam stormed back to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, winning (6-4, 5-7, 11-9). It was the match of the year so far.
On Wednesday we travelled to Woodland to face Pioneer High School. Sophomore Sean Johnson ’22 playing #1 singles won easily as did Kai Hay ’20 and Tim Cole ’23. Our athlete of the week was Chris Fong ’20. He has been not only the best player on this team for three years, since he was a sophomore, he has also provided a level of maturity and leadership that was impressive. His tennis was only exceeded by his character. He has not lost this year and has not been tested.
