Good afternoon Christian Brothers Student Athletes & Families,

As we all are adapting our lives to help combat COVID-19, here are some of the major changes that affect the world of prospective student athletes. As you are aware, athletics at all levels, recreational to professional, have been postponed. While it’s hard not to play the sports we love, imagine what it’s like for Olympic athletes, expecting to compete in Japan this summer, having their dreams potentially put on hold.

On the college level, here are the recent changes that will be continually updated and reevaluated:

·      The NCAA has cancelled all winter and spring sports.

·      The NCAA has granted an extra year of eligibility to seniors in spring sports.

·      The NCAA has banned all in-persona recruiting through April 15th

·      The NCAA has suspended all National Letters of Intent (to be reevaluated April 15)

What can you do?

If you are a 2020 and have either signed a NLI or committed to a program, you should make contact with your coach to check in and find out what specifically is happening with their team. For spring sports, you should ask if any seniors are planning on staying on for another year and ask if that will potentially affect your role.

If you are a 2021, you should also make contact with coaches and programs you are pursuing. Fortunately, so much of recruiting takes place on line now. You should be managing your social media presence by updating your athletics profiles and following/liking programs of interest. I’m sure you have more time on your hands right now, so use it wisely by pulling out the best clips and producing a high quality highlight video, posting it, and sending it directly to coaches. The video is going to be an important recruiting tool now that games, tourneys, ID camps, combines, showcases, official/unofficial visits are cancelled this spring. 

If you are a 2022 or younger, you should be strengthening your on line profiles in addition to reaching out and making first contact with coaches and programs of interest. While most coaches cannot contact you until June 15 (or Sept. 1stfor some sports) after your sophomore year, you should still express interest by sending emails, updates, and your video. You can also ask your high school and club coaches to make contact on your behalf so you are prepared for June 15th.

Finally, for athletes of all graduate years, stay healthy, fit and connected to your sport.  We are all getting antsy with the sudden lack of activity due to Sheltering in Place. There are numerous on line sport specific workouts that can be done at home. Reconnect with the great outdoors by going hiking, running, and biking to stay fit and not go stir crazy. Continue to watch your sport from the safety of your home so you can be the best student of the game possible. Stay connected to your current teammates and coaches on line, text, chat, snap so you are ready when we can get back out there again.
