Track & Field
This past weekend our Falcon athletes competed in two invitationals. Seven members of the distance team traveled to Orangevale in the Bronco Round-Up Distance Carnival. In keeping with the theme of this season it was cold and rainy throughout the evening. In spite of that there were many strong performances with Malia Gay ‘21 standing out with an all-time CB school record for 800m. Her time of 2:18.98 knocked over a full second off the old mark which had been on
the books since 1991. Her effort brought her home in first place in the Cowboy Hat section of the event. She was awarded a t-shirt as well as the coveted cowboy hat that goes to winner of each event's fastest section. That's our first hat ever. Way to go Malia! Also turning in strong performances were Isaiah Jimenez ‘19 and Nevin Afong ‘19 to finish 3rd and 5th respectively at 1600m with Isaiah being awarded a shirt for his effort. Nico Sanchez ’19 also recorded a lifetime best at 1600m. The fireworks continued over 3200m with Enrique Verschoor ‘19 knocking a huge 21 sec. from his previous best as he and Alberto Mujica ‘19 both dipped under 10 min. for the first time.
The rest of the team traveled to Elk Grove to compete in the Mark Macres Invitational at Monterey Trails High School. Our JV Boys 4x100m team of Michael Petilla ’22, Porter Lehman ’22, Jacob Castellanos ’22 and Clayton Ketcher ’21 brought home the Gold Medal to start off the morning. Varsity Girls 4x100m relay team of Chloe Decker ’21, Chane Sims ’19, Annie Charleboix ’21 and Columba Effiong ’22 brought home a Silver medal with a time of 51.84 seconds. Ryan Dong ’22 won 1st in the JV Boys 3200m and 4th in the 1600m. Raphael Lobo ‘21 took 3rd in the JV Boys 400m with a new PR of 55.03 seconds and 4th in the 800m. Brett Petkus ’20 soared to a new PR in the Long Jump and with a leap of 20 feet 11 inches winning 1st in his event. Columba Effiong ’22 has yet to lose at 100m and won her race by almost a half second with a time of 12.55 seconds into a monster headwind. She also easily won the 200m.
This upcoming weekend 4 of our Falcons runners have qualified to compete in the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto. Isaiah Jimenez ’19 and Nevin Afong ’19 will be running Friday in the 3200m. Saturday, Rafael Fernandez ’20 will be running the 110 High Hurdles and Columba Effiong ‘22 hopes to extend her school record in the 100m.
Throws results from a very competitive Mark Macres track and field invitational meet at Monterey Trail HS.
In Shot put, Danny Marquez ‘19 had a personal best mark of 34' 2.5". Emily Hancock ‘20 had a personal best shot put mark of 27' 7.5" and also posted a personal best discus mark of 89' 10".
Michael Hinton ‘22 posted a personal best of 72' 10" in discus. Abigail Co ‘21 notched two personal bests of 61' 8" and 22' .5" in discus and shot.
Dive
Despite some very cool conditions with rain and some wind, the divers had some of their best performances. The Sophomore team led by Shannon Shaw, Simone Gandy, and Marisa Cabrera continue to lead the Falcons. Our new freshman, Melody Lednicky, and Sydney Smith are also making great strides as they both try to juggle both swimming and diving.
Today’s meet against Capital Christian resulted in most of the girls getting a personal best for the season.
1. Shannon Shaw 148
2. Simone Gandy 145
3. Marisa Cabrera 131
4. Melody Lednicky 110
5. Sydney Smith 104
6. Marissa Galvan 80
One more dual meet before we start our Championship meets
Swim
The CB Swim Team had a mellow week of competing. On Thursday, we swam against Capital Christian and won both Varsity girls and Varsity boys. Given that Capital Christian only had 4 swimmers, two boys and two girls, we were able to modify the meet and condense it down. With Thursday being our last home meet, the CB swim team also held Senior Night, which was a great way to honor our departing Seniors. We will certainly miss our 14 Senior swimmers next year: Connor Christopher ’19, Owen Clark ’10, Callie Kendall ’10, Sara Littlejohn ’19, Zixin Ma ’19, Hallie Mikacich ’19, Milad Mohaddess ’19, Nick Piper ’19, Claire Ramos ’19, Aly Roberts ’19, Carmen Singer ’19, Luke Sorensen ’19, Hope Yeager ’19, and Kailin Yu ’19.
Next week the CB swim team will prepare for our last dual meet against Rio Americano and will start gearing up towards CAL League Champs on April 11th and 12th. Let’s go Falcons!
Freshman Baseball
Freshman Falcons baseball team started league this week beating Casa Roble Thursday 4-2. Ramon Ruiz ‘22 started the game on the mound for the Falcons and set the tone for the rest of the day. The Falcons only gave up 2 runs the entire game with stand out performances from Carter Bolnik ‘22 and Jake Tandy ‘22. Leading the way with the bats were Jake Elorduy ‘22 with a double and Sami Bateman ‘22 with a single. Friday the team travels to Casa Roble HS for game 2 of a three game series.
Varsity Baseball
Christian Brothers Varsity Baseball was coming off a big three game sweep of Sac High. Looking to extend their early season dominance, CB began their second league week, taking on Capital Christian. Not to be overlooked, Capital had only notched one loss to start their season.
The first game was an instant classic, a battle that played to the final out. CB stayed in it until the end, but Capital Christian pulled away late in a 7-6 victory on Monday. Taking it to the scoreboard early, Spencer Lozano got things stared with his relentless hustle around the bases, scoring on a wild pitch.
Capital Christian reclaimed the lead in the top half of the second inning. Capital Christian scored two runs runs on a double in the gap and added a third later in the inning. Not leaving anything to chance, CB made their mark in the bottom half of the inning, notching four runs. Graeme Farrell ‘19, Spencer Lozano ‘19, and Dominic Moreno ‘19 each had RBIs in the frame.
Capital Christian tied the game up at five in the top of the fifth inning, scoring one run.
The game was tied at five with Capital Christian batting in the top of the sixth when Capital Christian homered scoring two runs.
The last half of the seventh inning looked to be a spark for the Falcons. Showing heart and class, they managed to load the bases with one out. The game appeared over with the mojo heavily favoring CB. Like all great games, sometimes the perfect outcome ceases to exist. The winds picked up and the sun dropped behind the clouds. So too did the ever-so-close W the Falcons had in their claws.
The Falcons collected six hits, but fanned twelve times, in the high-scoring affair.
The senior slinger, Stephen Sedleniek ‘19, got the start for CB. Stephen went three hard fought innings, allowing three hits and racking six punch outs. The hard throwing junior, Jordan Gonzales ‘20, took the unfortunate loss, but showed true grit battling some big time Capital hitters. He went three innings, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out one.
Hard charging senior, Justin Kim ‘19, led CB with two hits in three at bats. Justin also closed the game out for CB in the seventh inning.
Game two lived up to the hype surrounding this big time league series. This time around was a low scoring affair.
Both teams were strong on the mound on Thursday, but Capital Christian was just a little bit stronger at the plate in a victory over the Falcons. George Rios ‘21 started the game and lasted three innings, surrendering five hits and one K. Looking to jump ahead early, CB got things started in the second inning when Reed Mercer ‘20 smoked a shot to the third baseman. With only luck saving him, the third baseman salvaged an out, but CB went up 1-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, Capital Christian tied things up at one when a bases loaded walk brought a run in.
Capital Christian pulled away for good with two runs off a blistery wind-induced sac fly in the fourth inning.
Larson Dana ‘19 took the difficult loss for CB. He lasted two-and-a-third innings, allowing two hits and three runs while striking out three. Junior Garrett Sadler ‘20 came in to finish the game, relieving Larson in the bottom half of the sixth.
CB left it all on the field again, marching a base runner to begin the top of the seventh. Things again appeared to favor the Falcons, but an overly aggressive base-running move by senior speedster Sam Copley ‘19, proved costly. Sam did his job, reading a terrible pitch in the dirt, not knowing the catcher would blindly make a miraculous play. Hoping to induce a careless throw to second, Sam stretched himself deep into a pickle and was thrown out at third. The next batter, junior Max Martinez ‘20, ripped an opposite field double into left field. That hit would have easily scored Sam Copley from second. Another nail biter in the books.
CB only managed a total of five hits. Spencer Lozano and Justin Kim each managed multiple hits to lead the team. The Falcons didn't commit a single error in the field. Graeme Farrell ‘19 had the most chances in the field with four, including an almost ESPN Top 10 play. Find Graeme and ask him about it.
CB looks to prevent a sweep, with game three tomorrow (Friday). Taking the mound will be Spencer Lozano in hopes of making his presence felt. Come help rock the Falcons as they look to tame the Cougars at home!
Go CB, Falcons First!!!

Nothing this past week, but rain. We have games on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday this week. Come out to watch!
Men’s Tennis
We had a very good week beginning with a 9-0 win vs. Del Campo. Chris Fong '20, our #1 player won easily (6-1, 6-0). That was followed by our three sophomores (Anthony Tan Andia '21, Alex Stone '21 and Ryan Price '21) who all won easily. Our three Freshman, Sean Johnson, playing #5 singles, Mitchell Youker and Cristian Gordon, playing doubles, continued to make their impact by winning in lopsided scores. On Thursday we went up against Capital Christian and we again won 9-0. We are 6-4 on the year and we are trying to get into the Section playoffs. Of note is the play of Lifan Liao '19, an exchange student from China who was a competitive Badminton player at home. He picked up a tennis racquet for the first time three months ago and is now routinely winning at doubles and scoring points for us. Also Chris Fong '20 and Kai Hay '20 are both 8-1 for the Falcons and are a big part of our current success.
Boys Varsity Volleyball
Varsity Volleyball has been busy this week with a tournament at Los Medanos College on Saturday and games against Del Campo and Sac High. On Friday, CB hosted Del Campo in a five set thriller (25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 20-25, 15-11), coming out victorious 3-2. Nathan Hatch’21 lead his team in kills and aces with 19, and 5, respectively. Junior Elias Hensley’20 contributed to our sideout game line with 33 receives while Riley Piccione ’20 lead his team in blocks with 6. Boys JV Volleyball
