Men’s Volleyball
The Varsity Volleyball squad ended their season with a league record of 7-5, and an overall record of 12-9. Although the season started rough with two knee injuries, and two disciplinary holds, the falcons rose to the challenge. Highlights of the season include the following; shutting down Monterey Trail at our foundation game, battling til the very end and taking a set off of El Camino- a league powerhouse, three exciting 5 set victories over Del Campo and Kennedy, and taking 2nd place in the Logan Bailey Invitational at Los Medanos College. Outstanding performances by: Liam Rapp ’20 during our second match against Capital Christian- Liam rose to the challenge of Outside Hitter earning 9 kills in a front row position and solidifying a fourth set victory; Nathan Hatch ’21 earning 19 kills in a single match, twice- once against El Cerrito and once in league against Del Campo; Elias Hensley ’20 earning 132 assists throughout the season despite being a first time, second string setter; and an overall impressive performance by Riley Piccione ’20 leading his team in aces (37), blocks( 43) and digs (49) and being recognized by CAL as an All-League athlete.
Swim
The CB swim team finished out the season with sending 7 girls and 14 boys to San Joaquin Sections in Lodi. The future of CB swim looks promising as our JV girls team placed 11th out of 48 teams. Freshmen Abby Fox ’22 qualified for finals in her individual event placing 14th and was also a big asset to the JV girls relay teams. The 200 Medley Relay with Melody Lednicky-Lehman ’22, Karina Elliott, Casey Stone ’22 and Abby Fox ‘22 placed 5th overall, which is the highest a JV relay team has ever placed at Sections. The 200 Free Relay with Eliza Mikacich ’22, Karina Elliott ’22, Brooke Brandenburger ’22 and Casey Stone ’22 placed 10th while the 400 Free Relay consisting of Eliza Mikacich ’22, Karina Elliott ’22, Melody Lednicky-Lehamn ’22, and Abby Fox placed 12th. Way to go JV girls!
Senior Aly Roberts qualified for Sections in the 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle. Aly made it back for finals on Saturday in the 500 where she won the Consolation final, placing 9th, with her best time! Way to finish out your last race as a Christian Brothers Falcon!
As for the boys, while no one made it back for finals on Saturday, CB sent the most boys we ever have to Sections. JV boys had freshman Luc Tran ’22 and Parker Spellacy ‘22 swim their individual events at Sections. Luc swam the 200 & 100 Freestyle while Parker swam the 50 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke. The Varsity and JV boys each had 3 relays as well. As for individual events, Varsity boys had three boys swim the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle, with Thomas Piper ’21 placing 18th, Sam Noonan ’20 placing 34th and Nick Piper ‘19 placing 37th. The coaches were very proud of every swimmer this season and were very happy to see the hard work that was done all season pay off!
Dive
The dive season finished with our Section meet at McClatchy High School in late April. The points we made there helped our swim team at the Section meet the following weekend.
The dive team had 7 girls qualify to compete at the Section level. 4 of those dove F/S, and 3 in Varsity. Our top performer at the meet was Simone Gandy 21 who made both of the cuts to stay in the top 16. She placed 10th, while her teammate Shannon Shaw 21 was 12th. Those 2 girls helped the F/S swim team place 11th out of 48 teams in our Section! Lily Ruyak and Marisa Cabrera were close to making the cut.
At the Varsity level we did not have anyone place in the top 16, however both Sydney Smith ’22 and Melody Lednicky ’21 stepped up as underclassmen to compete Varsity because we did not have enough F/S spots. They rose to the occasion and both beat several of the experienced Varsity divers.

Varsity Baseball
With the 2019 Falcon baseball season coming to a close this past week, CB still had something to play for. In an up-and-down season, their playoff hopes were still alive. Taking two-of-three the prior week from Del Campo, the Falcons looked to prove a point in league against a formidable opponent - the Rio Americano Raiders. This week turned into one for the ages.....
The Falcons asserted their will over Rio Americano on their way to an easy 11-4 victory in game one on Monday. Pitching and offense showed up today. Getting things started right away, CB dashed across the plate three times in the first inning alone, including one off a smashed single by Max Martinez ‘20.
The Raiders answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The proverbial CB errors thwarted a solid pitching performance by senior southpaw, Stephen Sedleniek.
CB notched four runs in the seventh inning. The offense was on fire. Hard hit balls, both for base hits and outs, were flying off the Falcons bats. Leading the happy hitting spree was senior CB captain, Spencer Lozano, who ripped a double into the gap.
Stephen earned the victory on the mound for CB. He went six and a third innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out six. Senior Larson Dana threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.
CB collected 14 hits on the day, while only striking out once. Senior Justin “JJ” Johnson ‘19, junior Max Martinez, Spencer Lozano, Senior Freddie Fiske, and junior Reed Mercer all collected multiple hits. JJ went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Falcons.
Coming right back Tuesday, CB looked for a solid showing as the Falcons celebrated senior night. Pregame festivities lightened the mood, but a fire was silently burning deep down inside the Falcons belly. Fireworks and drama were not missing from this epic showdown.
CB clinched Tuesday's game in dramatic fashion, with a 7-6 walk-off victory over Rio Americano. The game was tied at six with the Falcons batting in the bottom of the seventh when senior Graeme Farrell singled on a 1-0 count, scoring the winning run.
CB collected 12 hits and Rio Americano had eight in the high-scoring affair.
Rio Americano got on the board first, putting up three runs through three innings. Down three, CB chipped away over the next three frames. Chico State bound senior, Freddie Fiske, got CB on the scoreboard with a sharp single on a 1-2 count.
Rio tallied three runs in the fourth, extending their lead over the Falcons. Key Falcons errors and timely hits allowed Rio to pull away. Hopes and dreams waned; silence bellowed throughout the Falcon family. It appeared senior night was quietly ending for the fighting Falcons.
The fire and fight from the Falcons stayed simmering over the next two innings. They answered with two runs over the next two frames, hungrily chipping away at the Rio lead. The score was now 6-3 entering the sixth inning.
Needing a huge stop, CB got just that — a quick inning brought the Falcons back into the dugout. Feeling the fire burning, CB huddled up to stoke to flames. Exiting that huddle was an erupting volcano waiting to blow its top.
CB showed heart, grit and passion. Hits, walks and great base running flied in the face of the Raiders. No mountain was tall enough; no valley deep enough; no river was wide enough. The CB Falcons were on a mission tallying three runs in the sixth inning. The offense in the inning was led by seniors Cooper Laffan ‘19, Sam Copley ‘19, and Freddie Fiske ‘19, who all drove in runs.
Mojo was hot, and so were YOUR Falcons. Every CB loyalist present this evening was clapping their hands and stomping their feet. CB Nation was alive!! The fire morphed into a ravaging hunger, a hunger that looked for only one thing... a WIN.
That hunger kept eating at Rio going into the last half of the seventh. Ole Miss commit senior, Graeme Farrell, was the absolute hero of the fine victory. Ripping a 1-0 single to score the winning run, he clinched a big time win for the Falcons.
That volcano... yeah, it erupted all right. It exploded with a fiery felt across the CB campus. The crowd deafened the neighborhood as the CB spikes struck down on that holy home plate ground, splashing up dirt and dust. Screams, cheers, hugs, high-fives.... and yes, tears, flowed that evening. A game for the ages, and one no senior Falcon will forget.
Sophomore George Rios ‘21 earned the win for CB. He went three and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out three and walking one.
Butte-bound Senior Justin Kim started the game for CB. He went three and a third innings, giving up three runs and punching out three Rio hitters.
The Falcons rocked Rio for 12 hits in the game. Reed Mercer ‘20, Spencer Lozano, and Graeme Farrell each had multiple hits. Reed Mercer led the Falcons with three hits in four at bats.
Taking the first two, the Falcons looked to sweep Rio for their last game of the season. On this night Rio looked to impress as it was their senior night. Unfortunately, the impress never showed up for the Raiders.
CB clinched the battle against Rio Americano on Wednesday, winning 4-2.
The Falcons wasted no time at all, slapping a three-spot on Rio in the first inning. On the first pitch of his at-bat, Delta Valley College bound senior Justin Johnson blasted a towering bomb deep over the left field fence. Time was called at the adjoining JV game so they could retrieve the moonshot.
CB added a fourth run in the third and never looked back. Rio bounced two runs across in the sixth, but CB was never worried. The Falcons offense did take a nap after the first inning boom, striking out eight times and stranding a bunch of runners in scoring position. The ever-looming errors and base-running gaffs also showed up again. Luckily, CB had The MAN sixty feet and six inches away from the plate.
Taking the mound was the flame-throwing junior Jordan Gonzales. Jordan dazzled all game, pounding the zone. Strike after strike, Jordan displayed his dominance. Jordan got the brilliant win for CB, going the distance, while surrendering two runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out five and walking one.
Freddie Fiske led the team with three hits in four at bats.
CB capped the season off with a sweep, just in time to make a run in the Sac-Joaquin playoffs.
The Falcons finished 16-11 on the season, with a 11-7 CAL record; good enough to finish third in league. Playoffs begin next Week, as the Falcons await to hear who their opponent is. Update…The Falcons will host Ponderosa High School on Tuesday at 4:00.
