This past weekend the Falcons traveled to Davis to compete in the Les Curry Invitational. The first opponent the Falcons played in this 3 day tournament was the Roseville Tigers. In the 1st quarter the Falcons energy levels started off high as Jake Westman ‘23 banged out a dunk in the 1st minute of play. The Falcons led in the first quarter but carelessness with the ball made the score 18-10. The Tigers sneakily put up 22 points as the Falcons struggled to guard the little things, but the Falcons still led 37-32. The Falcons came out of halftime swinging. They were hitting all of their 3 pointers and caged the Tigers for 8 points as the 3rd quarter ended 59-40. The Falcons continued their dominance over the Tigers as the game ended 72-47 with the Falcons never giving up the lead the entire game.
The next day the Falcons played the Whitney Wildcats. Like a lot of the Falcon’s first quarters, it was a back and forth battle with the Wildcats who led the first quarter 13-17. In the 2nd, The Falcons kept pace with the Wildcats as both teams made good plays. The Falcons were just a little bit better as the score was 28-23 going into halftime. Although the Wildcats showed some fight and took the lead for a bit, the Falcons fought back and won the 3rd quarter with a score of 42-41. Both teams were evenly matched, but the Wildcats took the lead and the Falcons could never get it back as the game ended 53-57.
Because the Falcons lost to the Wildcats in the second round, but won in the first round against the Tigers, they were playing for 3rd place against the Davis Blue Devils. Notably the Falcons were missing two starters, Sean Underwood ‘25 and Jake Westman ‘23 to illness. The 1st quarter went by quickly with both teams making their shots, but the Blue Devils shot a little better taking the quarter at 14-10. In the 2nd quarter the Falcons struggled to guard the Blue Devil’s shooters and couldn’t make some shots of their own as the Blue Devils led at 30-23 going into half. The Falcons continued to make mistakes as they were surely missing the energy of their 2 starters, but they closed in the score against the deep ball Devils at 42-39 who were still winning. Davis's Missed 3 pointers that turned into offensive rebounds for the Blue Devils haunted the Falcons the entire game as the Devils got countless second chance points. The Falcons came up short in the end as the Blue Devils won the game 63-54.
With a 1-2 record, the Falcons placed 4th out of 8 teams in the Les Curry Invitational. There was a lot to be happy about and a lot to improve upon. The Falcons are now 7-4 as they head into another tournament. Good luck to our Falcons as they travel to Napa today to play in the Justin Sienna Christmas Classic against the identical Freedom Falcons at 6:00pm.
