In their first road game, the Falcons took on the Pioneer Patriots. Coming out of a tied first inning, the Falcons picked up the pace in the second and third innings scoring a combined seven runs. Despite the Patriots two two-run home runs late in the game, the Falcons refused to lose. Christian Brothers scored eight runs in the sixth inning to add to their lead. The Falcons run ruled the Patriots in the sixth with a score of 18-8. The offense was led by Cece Sidley ‘19, who hit 4/4 and was named player of the game. Other big hitters this game were Marissa Alders ‘22 and Karina Brower ‘19.
Last Friday, the Christian Brothers softball team competed against league rivals, Vista Del Lago, in the Falcons’ home opener. These are two well matched teams and the game was expected to be a nail biter. Vista led off the game with a quick run in the top of the first. Giana Hays ‘19 answered back with a home run to tie the game in the first. The Eagles were not phased and scored four runs in the second. After five more runs in the fourth inning by the Eagles, the Falcons brought in Grace Tangen ‘20 to pitch, and she shut down the Eagle offense for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, the Falcons offense fell flat against a strong Vista pitcher and defense. Down 10-1, the Falcons attempted to come back but the rally in the seventh inning wasn’t enough as the Falcons ending up losing 10-3.
Assistant Coach Mike Nivens said, “Today just wasn’t our day. The energy and passion wasn’t there today.” Captain, Jessica Hennelly ‘19 also agreed, saying that, “We couldn’t put the runs together and we didn’t play the defense we needed to play. They’re a very quick team and we were just slow. We need to put this game behind us and worry about our next game but we [also] need to learn from our mistakes from this game. Next time we face them, it will be another story. We need to beat them to win league and hopefully we will."
The Falcons play four home games this upcoming week. This Monday, they will face off in a non league match up against Manteca at 4:00. Their next league game is against a tough Del Campo team this Wednesday at 4:15.
