Cross Country
And we’re off and running!
The Falcons XC team should have another very successful season as we introduce a large class of 9th grade runners to the sport of cross country. On the men’s side, we are going to have to rebuild, having lost 6 of 7 runners to graduation. As we look to the future, Sophomore Ryan Dong ’22, is already trying to fill the large shoes left for him with the loss of a 4-time state qualifier, Isaiah Jimenez ‘19. Ryan will be joined by several capable Juniors and a host of 9th and 10th graders looking to become part of the Falcon’s storied cross country, past. Stay tuned.
For the women, returning runners will be the name of the game. Junior Malia Gay ‘21, a State Meet qualifier during the 2018 season, returns for her Junior season. Malia, one of the area’s best runners, will be joined by 9th grader, Alicia Romani ‘23, who is already proving to be a great training partner for Malia. Other returning runners, although only 10th graders could push CB women’s XC up the chain of successful programs, something we haven’t experienced in many years. Jenna Martinez ‘22, Michele Ratliffe ‘22, Skye Peters ‘22, Abigail Donovan ‘22 and Paige Sparks ‘22, have shown they have the making of a very good team. It should be an exciting year for the CB Women.
The CB XC Team welcomes new Assistant Coach, Tiffany Martin. Mrs. Martin comes to us as an experienced trail runner, Master’s Track Athlete and personal trainer. Her presence is extremely valuable having lost Coach Copley who was with us for the past 3 years. Coach Martin will also be working with the CB Track Program in the Spring.
Varsity Women’s Volleyball
Christian Brothers Women’s Volleyball heads Into to the 2019 season with high expectations. Led by Seniors Sophia Overstreet ‘20 and Sydney Durana ‘20 the Falcons look to make a run at their 4th straight league title and also a section title.
The Falcons return a cast of young players who had great off seasons to come back even better this season. Gigi Hurley ‘22, Lily Patock ‘22 and Maddie Hesse ‘21 look to pick up the slack of the departed seniors from last year.
On the court the Falcons may be a little undersized but they will make a commitment to being one of the scrappiest teams in the section. Led by Durana, who replaces Caty Cordano ‘19 the Falcons gave someone who is capable to lead them to achieving those defensive goals.
With the optimism high this year the Lady Falcons scheduled a tough pre-season starting vs 3rd ranked Whitney of Rocklin on Friday August 23rd. Make sure to come out this season and watch the Falcons work their way to another successful season!
Freshman Women’s Volleyball
The Freshmen Volleyball team has their first game on August 23 at Whitney High School. Practices have had great energy and show significant progress already! This team is very excited to begin competitions and has found great pride in being selected to play for Christian Brothers.
Varsity Football
Our Varsity Football team kicks off our season at Hughes Stadium this Friday at 8:30pm against Burbank High School. Coach John Wiley makes his CB head coaching debut and our team gets to show off months of hard work. Reed Mercer ’20 and Jon Pearson ’20 lead the team as captains and defensive stoppers. Jacob Stewart ’21 returns as Quarterback with leading receiver Luke Jones ’20 as his go to target. Burbank is going to be tough competition so come out and support our Falcons!
JV Football
1st game of the season is tonight against Burbank.
Women’s Golf
After an intense and productive preseason the Falcons will open up with their first match vs El Camino at Bing Maloney Golf Course, Friday the 23d at 3:30 pm. The Falcons have never enjoyed such depth across the entire team. Qualifying scores beat every score posted last year, wow. But now the shoes are on for real, let’s see if they ladies can carry on this start into the season. Carly Krause ’20 was elected team captain, she hopes to lead the team to one the best years in recent memory. CB will face tough competition from their usual rivals (Vista and Rio), but this team has adopted a new focus on competing against themselves, playing the ball, one shot, one hole and one course at a time, no matter who they tee it up against.
Women’s Tennis
The Lady Falcons returned to the court this week and kicked off their season with three hard-fought scrimmages. The team got off to a hot start, braving the 100+ degree heat to defeat the Kennedy Cougars by a score of 8-1 on Friday, August 16. A big thanks to all the parents and supporters who helped keep everyone hydrated and energy levels up with the team potluck!
The Falcons kept up the blistering pace with an 7-2 win over the Franklin Wildcats on Wednesday, August 21 at the Laguna Creek Sport Club. Top-seeded Fiona Babcock '21 set the tone early, battling through the toughest match of the day to win in 3-sets. Tessa Easterling '22 and Sydney Obmann '20 won their two singles matches by a combined score of 24-4. Finally, Lena Mikacich '22 and Isabella Warford '20 led the way as the Falcons swept their three doubles matches.
The girls wrapped up their perfect preseason with a 5-4 win at Rocklin on Thursday, August 22. With the score knotted a four wins apiece, the match came down to the final doubles contest. Mariana Garcia '21 and Sophia Sidley '21 came back from being down 5-7 to win in the tiebreaker 7-4 for the decisive victory.
The women's tennis team continues to grow in popularity with nearly 40 student-athletes signing up for the team during the summer. A total of 24 earned a place on the Varsity and Developmental squads, including 16 girls who played on last year's team, making this Coach Sean Mar's largest group ever. Led by co-captains - Sydney Obmann '20 and Ai-Linh Tran '21, the girls are eyeing a return to the Capital Athletic League playoffs. The team will continue its preseason schedule with a match versus Elk Grove High on Thursday, Aug. 29.
Men’s Water Polo
After two weeks of training, our men's water polo team is off to a great start. We are seeing some early strength from our year-round athletes, who are coming off of an extremely successful club season. Early stand outs are Caleb and Colin Quinn '20 and Sam Noonan '20, who are going to be the backbone of our team this season. Our first game is coming up on Saturday, August 24th at CK McClatchy High School and we will be facing Rio Americano, Granite Bay, and McClatchy. Our JV Boys are showing just as much potential. With more club athletes than we have ever seen, Christian Brothers JV water polo will shine in the area. We have some strength coming from Camden Branson '23 and Luc Tran '22. Our boys also have their first game on Saturday and will be facing the same teams in the morning at Rio Americano High School.
Women’s Water Polo
Our women's team this year at CB has completely flipped the script. With more interest and buy in, our ladies have excelled and are learning the game faster than I have seen in my time at Christian Brothers. The girls want to be in the water and are pushing each other every day to get better. Early stars are Emma Busch '20 and Brooke Brandenburger '22 who will be asked to both step up in a major way this season. They are showing great potential very early. Another mention will be freshman Logan Tiska '23, who has never played and immediately showed promise in adding to our varsity roster. Our girls look to improve our league standing and finish the season in the top three this year! Our JV girls are showing great improvement as well. Water polo is such a fast game that it can be a lot to learn in such a short amount of time. Our girls are learning quickly and showing that they are willing to put in the work and give this a shot. However, our numbers are lean. Our JV roster on the girls side has NOT CLOSED YET! If any freshmen/sophomores/juniors are interested in coming out, or even on the fence, we welcome the numbers! Please contact hannahwidman@csus.edu if you have any athletes who may be interested in coming out for the water polo team!
