With fall sports starting up, there's one sport that is sure to get a lot of attention: football. The varisty football team finished 5-6 last year, good enough for a 10 seed in the Sac Joaquin Section Playoffs. However, the season ended in disappointment, losing in the first round to Yuba City High School. The team returns starting quarterback Jacob Stewart '21, as well as top receiver Luke Jones '20. Jones lead the team in all purpose yards and touchdowns last year, and was 2nd on the team in receptions and receiving yards. On the defensive side of the ball, sack leader Reed Mercer '20 returns. This Friday will also be the debut of new head coach John Wiley. Wiley came to Christian Brothers after the departure of previous head coach Tyler Almond. Wiley played professionally for the Chicago Bears, and was a two time All-SEC defensive back at Auburn. He previously coached at Christian Brothers, and was the head coach at Davis and Cosumnes Oaks prior to returning.
Looking ahead to this season, Christian Brothers will take on Pleasant Grove, Vanden, and rival Jesuit after Burbank. The Falcons also face a tough league schedule, with Division III champion Capital Christian and perennial playoff program Sacramento High. Also in the league are Vista del Lago, Del Campo, Rio Americano and El Camino. Every game will be important, as the playoffs will not come easy and every win counts.
The football season kicks off on Friday, August 23 at Sacramento City College vs Burbank High School.
