The Christian Brothers varsity football team finished the regular season 7-3 overall and 4-2 in league, with their only losses coming to Pleasant Grove, Capital Christian and Vista Del Lago. The Falcons finished third in the Capital Athletic League and qualified as the 7 seed in the Sac Joaquin Section Division III Playoffs. The highlight of the regular season was a Holy Bowl victory over rival Jesuit, snapping a nine game losing streak against the Marauders. The Falcons finished the regular season ranked 33rd in the Sac Joaquin Section by MaxPreps.
Quarterback Jacob Stewart ‘21 finished the regular season with 1665 passing yards on a 63% completion percentage. He threw 19 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, while also rushing for 162 yards and 7 touchdowns. Luke Jones ‘20 was the Falcons best all purpose player on the year, finishing with 61 receptions for 690 yards and 9 touchdowns while also rushing for 7 touchdowns. Bryan Garrett ‘21 was also a viable threat in the passing game, hauling in 41 receptions for 519 yards and 7 touchdowns. Reed Mercer ‘20 finished as the leading rusher, with 109 carries for 425 yards and two touchdowns. Justin Douglas ‘21 was also able to consistently find the end zone, rushing for 354 yards on the season with 10 touchdowns.
Justin led the way on the defensive side of the ball as well, with 70 total tackles, including 19 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. Reed Mercer (16 tackles for loss) and Sawyer Hays ‘21 (10 tackles for loss) also tied for the lead in sacks with 2 apiece. The defense generated 16 takeaways on the season, with CJ DeShong ‘21 leading the way with 1 interception and 3 fumble recoveries.
The Falcons now search for a section title when they start their playoff run this Friday against the 10th seeded Yuba City Honkers (6-4, 4-2). The Honkers defeated the Falcons 30-28 in last year’s playoffs, so the Falcons look to get their revenge this year. The game will be Friday, November 8th at 7:00 at Hughes Stadium.
