Among the many spring sports at Christian Brothers, the dive team always flies under the radar. Practicing all the way out in Rio Linda with legendary coach Dede Crayne, the dive team prepares for a successful season.
After the graduation of now collegiate diver Owen Hunt ‘18, star of last year’s squad, the team looks for a new leader and go-to diver. Coach Dede spoke very highly about the only male on the team, Emmanuel Moyo ’19. “Emmanuel Moyo will surely score us lots of points this season.” As a returning diver, Moyo understands what it takes to be successful in the meets. Last year, he developed his grace and talent as a diver. Another competitor to watch out for is Bella Latino ’19. Latino was the highest placing Falcon at last year’s section competition. Crayne also included Haylee Adams ’19 and Sara Littlejohn ’19 in her list of divers to fear on the board. These seniors will need to step up and lead the young team. With a record number of 13 Divers, there is bound to be new talent within the underclassman of the team.
Crayne noted two competitive teams in the Falcon’s league, Vista and Rio. She said that these “will be tough meets but our numbers will surely carry us.” Crayne’s confidence in this year’s lineup has had a positive impact on all the divers. Bella Latino ’19 said she was “nervous to come into the season with out Owen, but after being at practice for a few days, I know we can definitely do well this season. All the underclassman are motivated and are picking up very fast!”
Similar to dive, the CB swim team is ready to kick and pull their way to a league championship. With the loss of many important seniors last year, the CB swim team looks to Head Coach Erica Gormley to help lead the team to victory this season. This is her first season as Head Coach and she is looking to create a fun and supportive environment for her swimmers. She mentions that, “We have a lot more swimmers this year then we did last year. We also have a lot of new seniors trying swim for the first time and we as coaches are loving that”. With the loss of many important seniors from last year, Erica looks to team captains Hallie Mikacich ’19 and Nick Piper ’19 to hopefully lead the team to a promising season.
Piper, eager to star the season, mentions, “It’s going to be a good season. We have a lot of new faces and a lot of fast people so its going to be a lot of fun. As a captain, I recommend that people come out and swim”.
Gormley went on to mention that this year the swim team is going to be doing something a little different when it comes to the meet schedule. The CB swim team will be participating in the first ever Holy Water against Jesuit and St. Francis. Enthusiastic about facing our biggest rivals she says, “Its going to be an especially fun day on March 19th when we swim against Jesuit and St. Francis”.
