The Christian Brothers Falcons lost their playoff game to the Yuba City Honkers 54-19 on Friday, as Yuba City ended the Falcons' season for the second straight year. The Falcons came in as the 7 seed in the playoffs, while the Honkers were the 10 seed. Quarterback Jacob Stewart ‘21 went 16-29 passing for 254 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, while also rushing for a touchdown. Luke Jones ‘20 surpassed 100 yards receiving for the third time this season, finishing with 9 receptions for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Bryan Garrett ‘21 also had 5 receptions for 84 yards. Reed Mercer ‘20 finished as the leading rusher, with 12 carries for 46 yards.
The Falcons started the game off well, stopping Yuba City on their opening drive. However, the offense was unable to capitalize, with the drive culminating in an interception that was returned for a touchdown. The offense got on track after that, as Jacob Stewart found Luke Jones for a 74 yard touchdown to tie the score at 7. The Falcons scored on their next drive as well to take a 13-7 lead. Things were all downhill for the Falcons after that, with Yuba City answering with two touchdowns of their own to take a 21-14. The turning point in the game came right before the half, as Yuba City recovered a squib kick and then scored on the next possession to take a 28-13 lead. Yuba City came out hot in the third quarter as well, winning the quarter 19-6 and putting the game out of reach.
Turnovers and big plays cost the Falcons in this game, with the team turning the ball over 4 times. Yuba City was able to make big plays throughout the game, with multiple touchdowns coming from over 40 yards. Justin Douglas ‘21 was one of the lone bright spots defensively, finishing with 10 tackles, including 6 tackles for loss and 1 sack.
With the loss, Christian Brothers season comes to an end. They finished 7-4 overall and 4-2 in league.
